Gil, Gui & me

Gil (drums) an Gui (bass) were the rhythm section in the 80s college band I toured with (as roadie, driver, light guy, photographer); Gil & I have remained friends, but we hadn't seen Gui since 1988 - last Saturday the three of us drank beer, ate sushi, laughed and talked for six hours... man that was fun!

Kronos Quartet
They specialize in experimental pieces that can be dissonant and harsh, but sometimes exquisitely beautiful! |

some of my old band photos published

Someone just published a bio of Steve Kilbey and The Church, an 80s-90s Australian band. In the late 80s, I was hanging with and photographing Game Theory, a California band.
The bands crossed paths, there was a soap opera, and that story is included in the book, along with a few of my contemporaneous photographs. It's fun to see my photos in a book, and it's a trip to see an event I lived through - tawdry though it was - told as history. NO CERTAINTY ATTACHED Steve Kilbey and The Church: by Robert Dean Lurie Paperback, 320 pages, 71 photos http://www.versechorus.com/NCA.html |

Dancing to The Flatlanders

I was expecting country *rock* (Ely used to hang with The Clash), but they were pure country, with beautiful voices!
The Flatlanders are a country band with considerable country-rock influence from Lubbock, Texas founded by singers/songwriters/guitarists Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock. (Wiki) |

I was hanging in the Davis California college music scene - taking, what else?, photographs - my nickname was Photo Robert... I sort of didn't fit in because it was the era of new wave and punk, and I had long hair - also, I'd started college at 22, so was a few years older then most of the kids... anyway, it was fun... some good memories, some bad, but ALL the musical memories are good!
Tomorrow is my birthday - I'm taking a 4-day weekend and - perhaps - driving down to Bakersfield looking for kick-ass honkytonk music, and lots and lots of coastline... will send photos... Theyyerrr gonna putme in the moovees... theyyer gonna make a big star outof meee... make a film aboutaman who'sad and lonely... and allIagottadewis aktnateralleee...!!! |

my first rock shot
Photo

There was a New Wave 80s rock/party scene in my college town - Davis, California - I wanted in on the party so bad, wanted to be a rock photographer, wanted back stage. I biked my Art/photography student ass to a campus gig, ~8 people in attendance, and took three shots – my first rock pictures! This was, of course, before digital, when every negative counted. I tried to get moments when the singer was singing and the guitars were all visible. The two guitarists went on to a moderate degree of regional/European fame. Last year - for the first time since 1981 - I contacted the lead singer; he had no idea these photos existed, I had forgotten who he was. He got a huge kick out of them and is including this one in an upcoming retrospective CD release. So that’s cool.
